As most of you know by now, I have a summer job in Alaska for the next two months. I flew into Anchorage Thursday afternoon, and flew out again about an hour later to the lodge where I will be working until October. The last stretch of my flight was clear and sunny, so that I was able to see some gorgeous mountains.
I’m hoping to continue writing and posting once I’m at the lodge, but my time might be somewhat limited. For now, therefore, I’ve scheduled several posts to appear over the two weeks. Two of them will be story updates.
In the meantime—my Areaex story took off about two weeks ago, once the group was settled on their journey. I’ve been working insanely to keep up with them since. With all the sorting and packing of the past few days, my writing has slowed some, but I managed to finish chapter 9 and start into chapter 10.
Oddly enough, almost nothing in chapter 9 happened the way I intended—it jumped into the story almost by accident. One character in particular decided to change directions on me. All last week, I was gloating over him, planning to kill him in just another chapter or so.
On Saturday, though, he turned on me, saying (tearfully, pleadingly?) “You’re going to kill me, I know you’re going to kill me.”
I sat back and looked at him then, thinking, “Oh great—now what? How am I suppose to kill you now, when you just said that’s what’s going to happen? It ruins all the surprise and drama that I was building up.”
Well, over Sunday, I came up with a couple more ideas. If they work, that character might get away with his upset attempts. Otherwise, I’m going back to ‘unwrite’ him and make him follow the original plan. I’ll let you know how it works.
